Bioscience Placement Wiki

Hi my name is Stephen Hyde. I am on placement at Dodgy Dave's DNA Lab as part of my BSc in Biology.
This is a record of my work placement at Dodgy Dave's DNA Lab.
During my first week, I learnt about some basic issues such as getting to know the staff and the sort of work that that did, including clean working, avoiding cross contamination and aseptic technique. The following weeks involved learning how to prepare samples and use the analytical equipment correctly.

My work involved assisting with the preparation and analysis of forensic samples from the police and other agencies. The purpose of these was to identify anybody who had been involved in crime by matching the DNA evidence with that already held on the national DNA database, apparently the techniques that are being used can identify a person from the smallest bit of DNA, such as that found in a single cell.
I also learnt a great deal about basic laboratory procedures and working practices
